SRI LANKA – Pastor and congregation attacked

PRAYER ALERT

A Christian pastor and his congregation in Sri Lanka were violently assaulted by a Buddhist monk and his associates during a service last Sunday.

Release partners say the sustained attack began shortly before 10am when the monk set upon the pastor as he went on an errand, a short distance from his New Life Church in Neluwaththuduwa in the district of Colombo.

As the monk began to insult and attack the pastor with a tree branch, the pastor fled to his church – only to be ambushed by 20 young men who beat him and accused him of attacking the monk.

The mob then raided the church where a service was being held and began to attack the 70-strong congregation, including the pastor's two sons, aged 19 and three. Other members of the congregation managed to shield the pastor's wife from blows with a wooden club.

When police arrived to disperse the mob, five Christians, including the pastor, were taken to a local police station for interview, along with the monk and some of the other assailants. The pastor was able to register a case against his attackers.

This attack comes just a week after a violent mob armed with clubs, knives and swords attacked a Methodist congregation in Valachchennai (Prayer Alert, June 21).

PHILIPPINES: Muslims Attack Villages, Force Christians off Land

Chrisitan Refugees

On the morning of June 1, hundreds of
Muslim rebels attacked three Christian
villages, launching mortars and shooting
randomly. Village officials also reported
seeing the rebels steal cattle.

About 160 Christians fled the area, leaving
their belongings behind. The families
sought temporary refuge in a neighboring
village, and VOM is assisting them with
supplies such as mosquito nets, blankets,
sleeping mats and medicine. Fortunately,
no casualties were reported.

Although soldiers have been posted in the villages, the believers cannot return because they fear that the rebels will kill them and burn their homes. The Muslim rebels, who want to force the Christians off their land, are thought to have timed the attacks to coincide with the rubber tree yield and banana harvest.

Please Pray!

Thank God for delivering these believers from harm! Pray that he will strengthen and establish them and supply all of their needs. Pray that they will soon be able to return safely to their land and homes and that God will protect them from harm.

Pray that the light of the gospel will shine on the rebels and bring about a godly transformation in their lives.

"We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed." 2 Cor. 4:8-9

VOM assists Christians in the Philippines through its Families of Martyrs fund and VOMedical, as well as other means of assistance.

Pray Request: Pastor Robert Asserian - Iran

Pastor Robert Asserian, of the Assemblies of
God church in Tehran, was arrested and
taken to an unknown location on May 21,
after a large detachment of Islamic Security
agents raided the church. Security agents first
raided Pastor Asserian's home, confiscating
many of his belongings.

A close friend of Pastor Asserian, who served
in ministry with him for many years, said, "The
church knew it was only a matter of time until
something like this happened. I would like to
ask the global Church to pray for Pastor
Asserian; he is a much-loved pastor, husband
and father of two young sons.

Please also pray for the whole church at this traumatic
time. I would like to see the international
community holding Iranian authorities to
account for this incident, which is just one
example of the regime's systematic and
flagrant abuse of Iranian freedoms."

Please Pray!

Please pray for Pastor Robert Asserian and his family. Pray also that the church will find ways to continue meeting and that they will not become discouraged. Pray that many Iranian leaders will experience God's mercy and goodness through faith in Christ.

"Only let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ … and not in any way terrified by your adversaries, which is to them a proof of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that from God. For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake." Phil. 1:27-29
